Question 1

What is RPL?

Accepted Answer

RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning. It is an assessment pathway, not a course. Instead of sitting through training covering skills you already use at work, you have your existing skills and experience formally assessed against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. It is a formal assessment process conducted by a qualified assessor.

Question 2

Who is RPL suitable for?

Accepted Answer

RPL suits people with substantial hands-on experience who have never had it formally recognised. That includes current and former Defence members whose service has built skills that map to civilian qualifications, tradespeople who learned on the job, and people who have been performing a role for years without holding the corresponding qualification.

Question 3

Does RPL guarantee I will get a qualification?

Accepted Answer

No. RPL is an assessment, and the outcome is the assessor's decision based on the evidence you provide. The fee covers the assessment process, not the outcome. Most people find they have a good portion of a qualification and need to close a few gaps.

Question 4

What happens if my evidence does not cover everything?

Accepted Answer

That is a normal result rather than a failure. Where your evidence covers part of a qualification, you are recognised for those units and can complete the remaining ones through training. Your assessor will explain exactly which gaps remain and what closing them involves.

Question 5

What kind of evidence do I need for RPL?

Accepted Answer

Typically a current resume, position descriptions, workplace documents you have produced, training records or certificates, and referee details from supervisors who can verify your work. Defence members can often draw on service records and course records. Your assessor will tell you what is relevant to the qualification you are seeking.

Question 6

How long does the RPL process take?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the qualification and on how quickly you can supply the evidence, so timeframes vary from person to person. The largest factor is usually how readily available your evidence is. Aimpoint will give you an indicative timeframe once your evidence has been reviewed.

Question 7

Is an RPL qualification the same as one gained through study?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A qualification issued through RPL is nationally recognised and identical to one issued through any other assessment pathway. The certificate does not distinguish between them.
